QENENIW̱ Restoration Project

We are pleased to present our newest restoration project at QENENIW̱¸ an important traditional W̱SÁNEĆ reefnet site on S,DÁYES (Pender Island)!

This project was initiated during the ṮEṮÁĆES Climate Action Project in 2020 and has evolved into a partnership between Tsawout First Nation and PEPAKEṈ HÁUTW̱ Foundation to do ecosystem restoration and protect the cultural heritage of this important village and reefnet site.

Each year students from the ȽÁU¸WELṈEW̱ Tribal School work with us to remove invasive species and take care of QENENIW̱. We have also started doing community volunteer days for S¸DÁYES residents!

We look forward to building the community connections that will grow this project and the healing work at QENENIW̱.

In February 2020, W̱SÁNEĆ youth groups organized by the W̱SÁNEĆ Leadership Council started to remove the invasive daphne laurel from the land. They learned from Tsawout First Nations elders and leaders about the importance of this village site.

We look forward to building the community connections that will grow this project and the healing work at QENENIW̱.
